Diego Armando Maradona, born on this day, October 30, 1960.
One of the most iconic images of his career shows Maradona seemingly facing six Belgian defenders during Argentina’s opening match at the 1982 World Cup. While the photo captures his aura, the reality was less dramatic: the Belgian players were moving from a defensive wall during a free-kick, and Maradona hadn’t yet touched the ball. Still, it reflects the fear and respect he commanded.
Argentina lost that match 1-0, and their tournament ended in disappointment.
Four years later, at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, Maradona rose to legendary status. In the semi-final against Belgium, he scored both goals in a 2-0 win, blending instinct, skill, and brilliance to dismantle a top defense. His performance, coming days after his historic quarter-final against England, remains one of football’s greatest individual displays.
Diego’s genius turned challenges into moments of magic, leaving a legacy that still ignites the beauty of the game!
